In large-scale mining and mineral processing systems, Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills play a vital role in material size reduction. As one of the key structural components of a SAG mill, the hollow shaft serves as both a load-bearing and material-transfer element, and its performance has a direct impact on the operational efficiency of the entire grinding system.

The hollow shaft is responsible for transmitting the rotational torque from the drive system to the mill shell while simultaneously providing a passage for material feeding or discharge. During continuous operation under heavy loads, the hollow shaft must withstand significant mechanical stress, impact forces, and fatigue. For this reason, it is typically manufactured from high-strength materials and processed with strict dimensional control to ensure long-term reliability.

From an operational perspective, the machining accuracy of the hollow shaft—including concentricity, surface finish, and fit with bearings and end covers—plays an important role in reducing vibration, improving rotational balance, and minimizing energy losses. A well-designed and precisely manufactured hollow shaft helps extend service life and supports smooth, continuous mill operation.

In mining engineering applications, SAG mills are generally installed in the grinding stage following primary or secondary crushing and ahead of ball milling. They are used to process run-of-mine or partially crushed ore, achieving significant particle size reduction while reducing the load on downstream grinding equipment. This stage is essential for improving overall plant efficiency and simplifying the comminution process.
